I’ve definitely been dreading the first time my son makes an unintentional rude comment to someone in my presence. It finally happened. I wanted to die.
“You have a baby in your tummy?”
He went there. DJ was basically asking one of my extended in-laws if she was pregnant. This is my, along with lots of others, worst nightmare. He may as well have said that she was fat. My heart started racing and I froze. The grandmother-like person (who is so kind and sweet) who he was speaking to chose to ignore him as well. Then, he decided to make it a statement.
“Look, mom!” (Spanky is now pointing at her stomach) “She has a baby in her tummy! Why she has a baby in her tummy?!”
OK, that was it. I quickly changed the subject and pretended that this awkward moment did not just happen. I texted my hubby and some friends who usually get a kick out of DJ’s antics to tell them what happened. I did nothing to correct him at the time. I didn’t know how.
Later, I told him that he cannot ask or tell people that they have a baby in their tummy, unless they tell him first. With a confused look, he asked “Why?” I told him that it is not nice and left it at that. I mean, the kid is 4, so he doesn’t fully get it. Did I handle this the right way? I have no idea, but I do know that this will not be the first time something like this happens. What is your embarrassing kid story?
