The question we all get asked: “What do you want to do on Mother’s Day?”
I don’t want to go to brunch where I will have to chase my 2 year old around the restaurant as everyone else enjoys adult conversation a lovely meal. I don’t want to have to get kids (and myself) dressed and ready for said brunch. I don’t want to change any poopy diapers or wipe anyone’s butt. I don’t want to sit through another episode of Sofia the First or Yo Gabba Gabba. I don’t want to be on all fours picking up pasta that fell (or was thrown) from the dining room table. I don’t want to break up a fight over the iPad. I don’t want to hear screaming/crying when I say the word “no” when one of them wants another snack. No dishes, no laundry, no cleaning, no being a taxi.
No alarm clocks- I want to wake up late. I want a bottomless mimosa. I want my regular Starbucks and breakfast in bed (with lots of bacon)and then maybe another nap. Between naps I want to watch a Kardashian marathon. For lunch I want a BLT with fries and a large Coke. Not a diet Coke, a regular Coke. Fountain soda. In the afternoon I want to sit on the porch and read a good book. I want to check my email and social media in peace. I want Pinot Grigio, a steak and a crab cake for dinner. I want a massage, facial, and a long hot bath. I want more wine. I don’t want any interruptions.
I say all of this now, as I desperately need some time off and a break from the hardest job of all- being a mom. But I know that if I had a day to myself I would miss my babies and want to be with them. If any dads are reading this- give your wife a few hours to regroup and breathe from this chaotic life on Mother’s Day. Then maybe grill or get takeout for the whole family. Don’t feel the need to plan an extravagant outing that will require a lot of work on her part….make it simple. I promise she will thank you.
