The amount of money we have spent in co-pays at the pediatrician to only be told, “It’s viral” is way more than I even want to think about. The real definition of a viral infection can be found here. The main point is that antibiotics cannot help with these infections.
My definition of a pediatric virus is as follows:
A sickness that commences when least expected, mostly on holidays, vacations, or during the week when mommy has an important meeting at work. High-ass fevers that scare the shit out of parents and cause constant temperature checking and lack of sleep for all involved. Causes: licking the floor, picking nose and eating boogers, hand holding with another snotty child, or the main cause: unknown. Cannot be cured by antibiotics, but Infants Tylenol and Advil should be rotated every 3 hours, thus causing diarrhea. Make sure you don’t mix up the medicines, and don’t mess up the doses, either. Appetite loss, fits of crying for no reason, rashes, coughing and snot often accompany these infections. Also, all diet restrictions can go out the window. Popsicles, juice, and chocolate chip cookies tend to ease the pain. Basically, just ride it out and continue to be miserable along with your child until his immune system kicks the virus to the curb.
