Disney World- the dream destination for those young and old. The greatest place on earth. The place where my 6 year old son has yet to visit. It seems, however, that every other damn kid in his school has visited or soon will be. It has been too many times I have heard, “mommy, (insert name here) is going to Disney World in a few days. When can WE go to Disney World?”
Ugh. My reply is always the same. We will go, someday. We have been in the middle of getting ready to sell a house, selling a house, buying a house, moving and home renovations for the last two years. Before that, we had a new baby and he was too young anyway. Legitimate excuses. Oh, and it costs a shit ton of money.
I wish there was some universal rule that when parents are planning a trip to Disney they keep it a surprise from their children until they are on their way to the airport. I don’t need a handful of kids, what seems like every month, telling my kid how much fun they are going to have at Disney and all of the rides they are going to go on and what freaking character they are going to eat breakfast with. Obviously it is impossible to ask their kids not to talk about it when they get BACK to school, but it would be nice if they didn’t. And some of these kids seem to be Disney regulars. I just don’t understand.
We will go to Disney, someday. I will keep my promise. But, I feel sad for the kids that really WILL NEVER get to go on vacation. They have to hear this shit all of the time, damn well knowing Disney is not in their future. And when we do go, I will explain to my kids that some of their friends aren’t as lucky as they are and will urge them to try not to talk about it TOO MUCH when we return.
In a nutshell: STOP LETTING YOUR KID BRAG ABOUT GOING TO DISNEY WORLD TO MY KID. THANK YOU.
