Getting my daughter dressed is a daily task that I do not look forward to. Whether it’s picking out an outfit for pre-K or putting on pajamas on at night, there are typically lots of tears, yelling, stomping and just craziness. For this reason, I let her dress herself a majority of the time because my nerves just can’t take it. Sometimes though, I need her to look somewhat presentable, so she does not have control over her outfit. It’s difficult because she is PICKY and very particular. Below is a list of clothes my 4 yo refuses to wear, along with some of her reasoning.
- Bottoms that are not super tight around her ankles
- Bottoms that are loose in general
- Bottoms that are not leggings
- Jeans (will wear jeggings though!)
- Jean shorts
- Pants that have a button (she can’t button and refuses to learn)
- Shirts with bell sleeves (she thinks they are ugly)
- Shirts with 3/4 length sleeves (she can’t handle when the sleeve does not touch her wrist)
- Cold shoulder shirts/sweatshirts/sweaters (makes her too cold)
- Hoodies, unless they have a zipper (must be a color she approves of)
- Socks that are too long (cannot reach her kneee)
- Socks that are too short (leggings need to be able to tuck into socks)
- Socks that make “her feet hurt”
- Underwear that gives her wedgies
- Bikinis- “I don’t want anyone to look at me”
- Dresses that fall below her knee- “TOOO LONG!”
- Dresses that are too short
- Overalls- “They are WEIRD”
- “Furry” boots (Uggs have been ok the last few days though, so we will see if that lasts)
- Fleece pajama sets (bc the pants are “not tight enough”)
- Barrettes- “Too hurty” (Yes, she uses the word “hurty)
- Sweatpants- “Too loose and look like a boy”
- Sweaters- “Too itchy and hot”
- Flip flops – “Too hurty”
- Winter hats with pom poms on top (This is a new development so she has been wearing mine)
- North Face jackets (No idea why -just a firm NO)
- Shirts that are not long enough to tuck into her leggings
- Shirts that are “too long”
- Button up shirts
- Capri pants
- Turtlenecks
- Mesh Shorts- “Too loose”
As you can see from the above list, she pretty much only wears leggings with long sleeve shirts that are the perfect length. Sometimes a tutu- depends on the day. I mean, is this normal? Am I raising a complete fashionista diva-child? Have you been through this with your kids? Help!!! I fear that this daily struggle is taking years off of my life.
